Official 510 DA Owners Group

Grab rails off the punch list. It took a little time to find something we liked and had a "sturdier" look than the stuff you get at the big box stores. Out with the old 2000 model year acrylic and in with the new.

We needed to make a cover piece to hide the center screw hole on the salon stair grab rail. (Also to hide the other holes). There wasn't a grab rail I could find that would cover all 3 holes, so we had to improvise. Did the best we could trying to find matching vinyl then I cut a 1/4" plywood backer and the Admiral covered it today then I installed it. Pretty simple project overall. The new bar is 36" and the acrylic was 32", again, we had to get as close as we could and go with it. :)

That is beautiful! Your work is always bad ass Sir.

Thanks Mitch!!
My friends use initials like OCD at times, not sure why(???) LOL
I haven't been clinically diagnosed with it.:D

I just enjoy trying to do things as right as possible.
Thanks again!

The worst/messiest and dirtiest part is now done. Drilling four, 6.25" holes SUCKS!!! Just need to get the custom mounts and we will be ROCKIN! My helper left after the drilling so I could only get sample pics with the tape still on the hardtop with the speaker. ;)
The actual PVC speaker mount will be painted to match the hardtop, hopefully it will blend nicely.

I had to move the forward speakers to the inside of the lights. I spent a considerable amount of time measuring the gap inside the hardtop as it moves outboard of the lights and got concerned the speaker magnet might not have enough room to fit safely. The plan was outboard of the lights, but I decided to go inside to be safe. It's a tight fit as it is, no sense in making matters worse as there is only a 1-7/8" gap! I cut a piece of wood and attached it to a tool so I could feed it into the "gap" to see where it started to get smaller. Wasted a LOT of tape making marks on the hardtop to make sure when I drilled it was going to be okay. I also attached a CAD drawing of a couple different angel options. I went with the 23° option.

Note: The wires hanging are the +/- speaker wires and the 4 RGB wires for the LED's in the speakers.

Taking off for a month to work in Mexico next week, hopefully the speaker mounts will be done by then. :)
Looks Good! This is what a previous owner of our 510 had done to add speakers in the hardtop - 4 8.8's

Finally back from Tulum after 20 days. Feels good to sleep in my own bed!

My fiberglass guy extraordinaire stayed at my house while we were gone and got a start on the foredeck clean up. We removed the sun pad and all of the snaps and tracks since we never use the pad and it was really nasty. There was a small spot that showed some water penetration during the survey near 2 snaps on the port side. When I put the boat in storage I removed the snaps and drilled much larger holes. I then placed a fan over the holes and let it run for 3 months to dry it out. I am happy to say it was a success, no more moisture in the meter readings. He has since filled the holes with some West systems (whatever he used, LOL) and now the 55 holes are ready for gel this week.

Has anyone installed a water maker on their 510? Love to hear about your experience.

A little more progress over the weekend. Gel coated and wet sanded to 2,000 grit. We will hit it today with 3,000 and be golden!!

While I am still waiting for the custom speaker mounts, I decided to add another sub over the weekend.:D (1 just wasn't enough LOL)

Finding the right location was the challenge because my AC duct is at the end of the helm seat where we would normally install it. So, I went with an enclosed sub from JL and upgraded the Kicker amp to a new RD 500/1 from JL as well. I installed it under the seat facing upwards under the helm seat. After listening to it with the bench seat back in position, it just wasn't as expected, basically it didn't have enough room to "breathe" so to speak.

So, I moved the duct out of the way and cut the end off the gray starboard piece off, used some wire shelving and installed that in its place. Now that sub really adds a ton of bass in the helm area which will be great to balance out with the 4 speakers that are at or in front of the helm. Under the sub I used rubber strips to raise it off the deck and keep it from vibrating and lastly installed a bracket to keep it from sliding forward.

Old Kicker amp.

The foredeck is now 99% done, I just need to compound the non-skid in the sun pad area but the rest of it looks like it just came out of a mold. My guy is REALLY good!! There were 55 screw holes to be drilled out, filled, sanded and gel'd over. Can't see any of them now.

The speaker install is getting closer to completion. I installed temporarily to get the holes drilled and held the speakers in with 3 screws as I will have to pull them all down and re-paint the rings to match the hardtop better. And as luck would have it, I dropped the fourth ring while installing and it broke!!

I will have to wait another week for it to be repaired. (Butter fingers!!)
Overall the sound from just the 2 front ones made a HUGE difference.

He matched the gelcoat so well, did he have to experiment with subtle tinting or was it just an out of box gelcoat colour?

Definitely a tinting process to get it to match 23 year old faded gel. :) He is really good at it! I saw 9 shade variations during his testing to get it too match perfectly. It is still "kicking" so he will need to hit it one more time with a wheel to get the final shine. You cannot tell where the blend starts or stops at any position. Truly an art form!

Next week he is going to start on a section, (about 20'), of the port side below the rail. Some P.O. repair jobs that look like heck and many years of dock rash and scratches. He will only have to gel about 6' and the rest will be wet sand. I will get before and after pics next week.

Finally! My canvas guys showed up and got started on the new camper back frame. Next week they will pattern the top and the following week the glass panels.
It's all coming together.

Hello and we are going from Michigan to D C to inspect a 2000 510 with Cat 3196’s in her.
Boat has all
Maintenance records and service provided by Cat certified mechanic and boat looks well taken care of.
We had a 2000 410 sundancer and sold to move up to this size boat.
Any advice or insight is appreciated.

Good luck on your trip!
I am by no means a mechanic, but the things I looked for were any excessive soot build up on the transom/platform etc. That can be a sign of some engine work needed like turbos, filters, injectors. I only know this because the PO of my boat had all of the above replaced and it eliminated all of the soot build up.

A couple of the 510's we looked at in Grand Haven had terrible soot issues on the transom and even covered the dinghy. One look in the engine room and you knew they weren't being maintained properly. (dirty, messy, stinky engine rooms are a no go in my book)

If the engines are in good order, the rest is a piece of cake. (IMO)

Just an fyi, there is a 510 closer to home and is stored in Ludington. In all transparency, we did look at this boat and it needed some serious attention. IE Freedom lift pump replacement, AC overhaul in 2 locations, the interior cabinets were peeling in many locations, the engine oil pump out system needed to be replaced etc. I have been told that all of the issues I noted were taken care of. (?) Lastly, the pictures the broker shows of the salon are NOT of this vessel. They are stock photos from a different 510.

Have fun with your search.

Thank you for all that, I agree with your stance on a dirty engine room and this one appears to be well cared for and maintained thoroughly, per the mechanics log book and receipts.

We thought about that boat but I don’t care for those freedom lifts and that boat was stored where one of the marina fires took place and they aren’t allowed in to Check on their boat so it was a no go for me.

Getting closer to completion! Just need to put the rings in the spray booth to match the hard top interior.
This week!
FYI, the sound is incredible. The cockpit is fully immersed in great sound at any level and no matter where you sit or stand.

Looking for a little help in finding this part. It is for the bow power cord to run through and it helps to keep some water out of the locker where the cord plugs in.
Any ideas what it is called and where to get one? This is a photo of a Tiara and I have emailed the local Tiara dealer with no response.

TIA
