Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Thanks for bumping me back into the conversation. The good news I am going to change oil on both engines so the oil discussion was relevant too. I just ordered 18 gallons of T4 15/40 from Walmart so I am ready once I finally take care of this leak.
Out of curiosity why 18 gallons for the 2 engines?

can’t really argue with real-world examples!

I’ll switch out to DEO-ULS 15w-40 in the spring. Anyone want 14g of T1 30w with 1 hr on the oil?

Funny thing. I just checked CAT's website for pricing on that as I intend to change over also, and got the following message:

This part has been indirectly replaced. Please consult your dealer for product replacement options.

Yup, I saw that as well when I tried to buy it. That's when I called my local CAT dealer, and got more confused...

Uhhh, well if I did my math right, I need 11 gallons at a minimum. So I got extra mostly just because it comes in handy. But as I write this I realize I don't really need that much extra. But I'll just use it in the next oil change.

It's amazing how used we are, at least me, to Amazon delivery. Walmart sends me way to many texts/emails about my order, and it's being piece meal delivered. I got one quart of oil, then another the next day, then something else I ordered, etc. then more texts, etc.

FYI I talked to Milton CAT up here in NY and the supplier for DEO is backed up. They expect it to get better in the next month or so but the current DEO-ULS 15w-40 PNs are:

1 gallon 5153973-200
5 gallon 5153975-200

So what other items should be changed along with the oil? Is there a standard list? This is my first oil change on a diesel so I am not familiar with the procedure and how it defers from a gas automobile (oil, oil filter, crush washer) engine for example.

just oil and filter, I usually do the secondary fuel filter at the same time (the spin on CAT one on the engine)

You should have a Reverso oil system. There should be a manifold and a pump. Simply take the hose and place it into a suitable container, open the valve for the appropriate engine and then turn on the pump to drain the engine. You can also use the pump in reverse to fill the engine, but I always add it to the top as I think there is still dirty oil in the hoses. Filter are like a car except larger... I also add oil to the filter prior to installation, so when I start the engine, there is oil immediately.

You can also clean the air filter using a K&N filter cleaner kit from an auto parts store.

1) 10 filters
2) approx 14 gallons of oil
3) 23 engine zincs (https://www.boatzincs.com/CAT-3126-AnodeKit.html)

10 filters??
Typically...

2 Racor Fuel filters per engine
1 Screw on 10 micron canister fuel filter per engine
1 Oil Filter per engine

1 each Fuel and Oil filter for your generator.

My Westerbeke diesel genny has a spin on mounted to the engine and 1 Racor. When I removed the spin on black crud fell out, I don't think it was ever changed before me.

Be careful when you pull your zincs out, they will most likely break off anyway, almost all of mine did despite how carefully I removed them.

And get some 5 gallon buckets, with lids. for your oil change.

some installations also have the in-line black filter in between the racor and the pill bottle filter. Ours doesn’t for some reason though
