Self Checkout---Like 'em or hate 'em?

I use the self checkouts at HD and lowes etc but do not at the grocery store unless its just a simple buy. I‘m not comfortable enough with them to be weighing produce items and punching in product codes. Karen can fly through those things and when I’m with her I can barely keep up bagging the food to pay attention to how she does it, and I don’t much care to either.

Here's how it goes for me....1. Shop throughout store and place items in cart....2. remove items from cart and scan,,,,,fight with bag system and place on counter when full.....3. place all filled bags in cart......4. wheel out to truck and place bags in truck....5. when home remove bags from truck and place on kitchen counter....6. remove items from bags onto counter....7. place all items in cupboards.

That whole grocery shopping thing is a time waster. I have to handle all that stuff 7 different times to get it all in my cupboards. The self checkout thing just makes it all the more aggravating. The sweet part is, it's available and I have the money to pay for it. I have spent time in parts of the world where there was little available to buy so this self checkout is sweet in comparison. I do think this shopping online thing and having it delivered may be worth looking into.
We use shopping on line for groceries and Target. They are at our house a couple times a week. We have one shopper that knows our preferences and we always try to get him to pick our order. I'm a fan.

Love em

I have absolutely zero patience which I inherited from the old man. I can go through a self-checkout much faster than waiting in a regular checkout line.

The last time I waited in line, the guy in front of me paid his entire grocery bill with singles. I took him 5 minutes to count out the individual ones. After he did that and handed the stack to the checkout lady, I waited while she counted the pile. It wasn't enough, so he had to start over.

Another reason is comic relief. At the place I go for groceries, the lady who polices self checkout is always one step away from a full meltdown. I've seen her lose her 5hit several times.

I absolutely hate them and avoid them where ever possible. Maybe I'll go through them if I just have one quick item but that's it. At the grocery store, never. Rarely do you ever scan a full cart without a problem and if you pick up any beer or wine, it stops and a customer service person must come over to verify age. If I wanted to work at a grocery store, I would have applied for the job. Our local Publix grocery store tried to force the self checkouts. Within 3 months, they put more manned lanes back in because people refused to use them and the lines were ridiculous.

Yep, get behind the old bag who is arguing over the 30 cent coupon that requires 2 more cashiers and the manager to discuss, after you already emptied your cart on to the belt.
Then tell me self checkout isnt better.

Pisses me off when I buy alcohol and have to wait for some young punk to come over to verify that I am old enough to buy alcohol

The other day I’m at the Meijer self check out and was trying to buy alcohol. This lady came up to me and asked for my ID. So I showed it to her. She told me I had to take it out so she could look to see if it was expired. I told her she was the only one that does this. She told me it was the law, and that is what Meijer requested all of them to do. She did not care how old I was. She just wanted to know if it was expired

For us it depends on the store. At the Walmart near us (which we try to avoid) the cashiers are horrible and always seem to double-scan some items. Then when you realize this you have to go stand in line at “Customer Service” for a refund. So at that store we always use self-scan. Aside from that I prefer a cashier, especially in a grocery store when we have a full cart.

Another reason I prefer a cashier is if they miss something I feel like a I got a deal, if I miss scanning something I feel like a thief.

Meijer in MI has been scanning ID's 100% since mid-last year. They aren't allowed to not ask for ID anymore, even at the gas stations...even if yer 100 years old...

I do not have a problem with them asking for an ID. It was in my wallet and she made me take it out. You can see my birthdate on my ID without taking it out of my wallet. She had to see if it was expired. She was not looking at my birthdate. In other words, she could care less how old I was.

Did she scan it? You 100% have to hand them to the cashier here because they scan the code on the back. That's how they confirm whether or not it's valid...so...yeah...you gotta take it out of your wallet.

Alcohol enforcement has become absurd. Now these stores have ID everyone which is just silly and stupid.

Don't blame the stores, blame the idiot underage drinkers out there (and their parents) for the massive lawsuits these companies have to protect themselves against...

No, I’ve never had my ID scanned anywhere when buying alcohol

Its not the lawsuits. Its the liquor commissions.

I refuse to go to Walmart because of self checkout. Give me 5% discount, I will do the work, otherwise I'll wait for a cashier. I try to stay away from any store with it.

LOL. That comment belongs in the funny shit thread :):)

I am all for automation. I have spent a good part of my life working on it and creating it. But Like I stated in one of my replies. I don't work there. So make there be a discount for using the self checkout then I would be more inclined to use it.

I do not like the self checkout unless I have ten items or less. It is all about time for me. If I am buying two carts of groceries I sure as hell aren’t going through the self checkout with $400-$500 worth of merchandise. They sure as hell better bag it for me, ring it up accurately, take my coupons, and give me my fuel points.

The inventory control people are nefarious and will put one price on the shelf and another price at the checkout. I watch like a hawk.

As for ID when I buy beer, I make them enter my birth date manually. When they scan your ID they get much more than age verification. They get your name and home address. If the law says 21 and over and you are a 50 YO dude with male pattern baldness and wrinkled hands there is no need other than intrusion to take personal identifying information. Next they will try to put a chip in my right hand and a mark on my forehead.
