High probability the trim position sensor on the starboard side of the drive has failed. Kind of a difficult do it yourself job. I just had mine (along with the trim limit switch on the port side of the drive) replaced under warranty on my 2009 175 Sport. If you search these forums on "trim position" or "trim gauge" and you'll find lots of threads on the topic.

Does the trim button on the throttle allow the engines to go UP and DOWN, or only DOWN, and you have to use the trailer buttons to move the engines UP?

I had / have that issue, its the sensors and safety switch (doesnt allow the engines to go UP from the throttle)

I have read, and was told, that the parts are fairly inexpensive, the labor involved is not, as the entire wire routing and parts need to be replaced. I was also told its better to just deal with it, as its a common part that goes bad.

The traditional cause of this is a band trim sender unit, or a bad connection with the trim sender wires. These are the little hockey pucks mounted down on the sides of the drive. The SD may be new enough to have SmartCraft. If it does the issue may also be in the SC configuration, bad connection in the wiring, and yes again the trim senders themselves.

If it is the sending units you want a tech to do the job while not terribly complicated. The book says the drive has to come off. An experienced good mechanic can leave that step out and take some of the sting out of the bill. I've had mine replaced twice and the drive has stayed on.

Henry,
About how much did it cost to have them replaced without removing the drive? I am currently using my trailer up button to trim up. I was waiting until i needed to pull the drive for another reason. I wonder if I can find someone around me that can do it without pulling the drive.

any one know if it could be the fuse and where it is ,,,,,,,,,,,,, if thats possible i would check that

I see no fuse in line with the trim wiring on the wiring diagram. There is a 20 amp circuit breaker at least on my 270 that is located at the helm. If the circuit breaker was tripped then they would not work at all - not just the gauge not working.

John,

In 07, the parts were $ 78.00. The labor on the bill is 3.5 hours. However, that also includes installing a complete zinc package (the boat was out of the water mid season I figured cheap insurance), drilled out an obstruction in the speedo pitot pickup, install the senders. He also adjusted/inspected the shift cable, the engine to transom cable was getting dodgey. So maybe 1.0 to 1.5 hours for the trim senders. R&R a Bravo III has got to be at least two.

The trim limit can be by-passed easily to use the trim button, you must be mindful of its function and use it carefully .
should you wish to keep it original i would recommend you rewire it using 2 diodes . remove the 12 feed from the trim gauge and tape off.
install a jumper from the gauge 12v feed to the control box, install a diode in the blue wire ,install a diode in the green wire, connect both diode ends to the feed wire of the gauge. power to the gauge is now supplied ONLY when you press the button.
the reason being if your wires corrode or lose their insulation you will be putting 12v directly into the water .electrolsys heaven every second the key is in the ON position.
