Trust me, I used plenty of lube to get it in there but I wiped off the extra lube because I didn’t want a sloppy tool for pics.
Yes , I use dish soap to lube it up. I literally had to put all my body weight on it with my knee to get it into the tool.Yup, thats how mine fits when i tested with my spare. Havent tried my install as yet. But will see as well. Jeremy are you using dish soap for lube? I did and it was still a fight to get the impeller in.

What was your attack plan for the port impeller? Top of motor or from reaching around the front of the motor? I feel I can reach around the motor with a mirror if the tool works.I bought this tool and did my impellers for the first time this past weekend. It took me about 45 minutes. Piece of cake and a great invention. I can see how this could be a nightmare without, especially on my port side where you have limited access and visibility. But I agree it was a bit stubborn getting the impeller in the tool. It needed to be muscled in there. I bet it's easier when it's not as cold out and the impeller is a bit softer.

I started from reaching around the front of the motor and quickly realized operating blind was not working out so well. I'm a smaller guy so fitting back there wasn't an issue, but i could see it being an issue for some. I then decided to lay across the top of the motor and wedge my head between the floor, gas tank and motor. It was decent visibility. I removed the raw water hose attached to the fuel cooler to get a bit better access to the impeller cover. Then it was just a bright light and a ratcheting wrench, and done... Not too bad of a job. I would almost argue changing the port side lower aftercooler zinc is more of a pain. I cut down 3 zincs to varying sizes just to get one to fit into the space you have to put a new zinc in. Are the Sherwood pumps the original model to your 8.3 manual engines? I’d like to get this tool and checking the size and fit for my original pumps on my 8.3 manual engines. thanksI have the tool and use it. This impeller fits perfectly and lines up well with the Sherwood P1730C pump.
I have the 6CTA's 8.3 ms.
My marina neighbor has QSB 5.9's. She bought the impeller tool and had the problem that the tool was too small for the impleller, just as you are describing.
Ok, still learning these engines. Is there a way to verify the model I have?I have replaced the original Sherwood pumps with the "new" Sherwood pump on both engines. They take the 17000 impeller.
It’s best to call the number, tell Andy your impeller part number and he will let you know what tool you need. Email was spotty with him, I called him and he said that he would check his email and got back to me. I had 3 or 4 emails to him with no responseOk, still learning these engines. Is there a way to verify the model I have?
Ok I’ll look and see what the impellers the previous owner left with boat for spares. Hopefully there is a part number.I echo what @Chris-380 said about email and responsiveness. I told him what impeller I used and he sent me the tool. FWIW, mine is gold in color. Not sure that makes a difference or not.
When you change the impeller, is there a key and a keyway? If so, then I'm pretty sure you have the Sherwood Pumps. The redesign that Sherwood did was to correct a problem with an internal seal that caused the shaft to corrode and eventually break while at speed. If your impeller shaft has splines, then you more than likely have the SBMar "upgraded" pumps by Tony Athens.
