Irene shifts west and is going to make land fall at the front door of my beach house and I can't get the boat out of the water :( I let you know if the canvas holds

Canvass... no! Maybe a mooring cover with extra tie-downs... better yet, one of those cargo nets over the cover would be great!

Good luck!

I think I'd take my canvas down and put it and all my seat cushions in the cabin. Plus anything else that is loose.

Good luck to all of you guys. I have never had to go through an actual hurricane but we have been known to have winds gusting over 60MPH and even that tears canvas right off of boats. Earthquakes aren't so bad now huh?

Your problem isn't as much with the winds as it will be with the surge ahead of the storm eye. It doesn't really matter if the canvas holds if you can't figure out how to keep your lines adjusted for the rising water then again for the falling water after the eye passes. Last advisory was estimating an additional 10-13 ft of water.

I wish you and everyone else on the east coast a lot of luck.........even if you prepare well, it still takes a lot of luck to come thru one of these storms without significant damage.

Good luck. Hubbey is in NJ... Shipped a Generator Fex-Ex to him today for our House up there.
I think we may have a indoor basement pool and convertible roof when it's all said and done.

Thanks Guys…..I hope it works out –Frank–I asked the Harbor Master about storm surge and he said with the floating docks, high pilings and the location of the marina that should not be a concern –however he said the last hurricane that went threw the leaves, pine straw and other debris clogged the drain to the self bailing boats and caused them to become bath tubs…… anyway I know what your all thinking and I agree!.......... “I am Toast”

I know the 280 well, I would tape the seams all the way around the engine hatch cover. You will need 3 or 4 inch tape. It's clearly not going to help having extra water flow into the bildge. It's a well built boat. Strip all the canvas and tie her down! She will do fine except for other boats and objects against her...

Good luck to all!!!

I just received this email from the town manager:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The storm has taken a much more dangerous track for PKS. As you can see in the photo below, the eye of the storm passes through the center of the town. The track of the eye has moved east-west over the past 24 hours----at this point the exact track is irrelevant.

What was previously a very dangerous situation is now an exceptionally grave life-threatening situation. With 8-10 feet of storm surge and homes on the east side of the eye, we could see homes in town literally swept away.

Today’s Mandatory Evacuation Order has now taken on greater importance. Public Safety personnel are out today in force advising everyone to leave the island. All citizens are strongly urged to leave the island immediately.

Folks, if there was ever a time to leave, this is it.

At this point, about all you could do is find a river and move your boat somewhere inland.

Good Luck,

Don

+1 on that. Go up the back of beyond Morehead/Beaufort maybe? A couple of really well set anchors, no canvas and a prayer...good luck indeed.

I disagree - it is too late to move the boat. If you visit it at all today, I suggest that you take any pictures needed to show that you complied with your hurricane plan (if your insurance requires you to have one), make sure all of the electrical is off except for the bilge pumps (including turning off the memory power to your stereo) to give your pumps maximum run time, then do what you need to secure yourself and family.

By now, you should already have set lines and added chafing protection.

If you are going to take a direct hit - that is the reason you have insurance. Boats can be replaced.

It is too late for me to move the boat-and with my current situation- I could not go anyway plus they might not let me back on the Island....I am afaid its going to be a direct hit!! if it stays on the current track. I called my insurance agent and I am good to go!

Here is the latest from the Town Manager:
The Mayor has issued a curfew order effective 8 PM today for PKS.

Ken

Thanks for asking! The harbor master was right the new dock system handled the storm surge and the all the boats took a direct hit without any damage -however -I could not get down to the boat and as it was suggested I had the neighbor take the cockpit cover off -well he did not lock the center section of the windshield back and the door swing open in the wind and shattered the port side windshield
Oh well -getting a new windshield is anther story by it self
