Starlink

@ocgrant - Grant I simplified what needs to be done from that video since he included a way to remove the array with an extra coupler. I would just keep a service loop in the mount and add that connector at a later date when actually needed. That is only another failure point considering being in salt water.

I also listed the components he used to get this done, as he puts it. I like his term X-Swapped so take note on the cable ends that need to be replaced.

This is exactly what I am going to wire up when I get to this project in a few weeks.

12v to 48v DC to DC inverter: https://www.amazon.com/SMAKN®-Synchronous-Voltage-Converter-Waterproof/dp/B00VE63K42/ref=sr_1_3?crid=ZVXOUTBU1T7N&keywords=SMAKN+Synchronous+Buck+Voltage+Converter+DC+12V+to+48V+4A+192W+Power+Supply+Module+Waterproof&qid=1673448775&sprefix=smakn+synchronous+buck+voltage+converter+dc+12v+to+48v+4a+192w+power+supply+module+waterproof,aps,447&sr=8-3

Here is the POE injector being used in his video: https://www.amazon.com/Tycon-Systems-POE-INJ-1000-WT-High-Injector/dp/B07BKV6NYD/ref=sr_1_3?crid=JLGH7PU2TW20&keywords=Tycon+Systems+POE-INJ-1000-WT&qid=1673449026&sprefix=tycon+systems+poe-inj-1000-wt,aps,167&sr=8-3

LOL… I watched the video again last night and clicked on his details info and ordered all the stuff from Amazon. Seems pretty straight forward. Can’t wait to get the 3D printed mount assembled to see where I am going to place it on my hardtop. Still running through my head though what is the advantage of having it run via 12v. When I am on the hook I am usually doing something in the water if not usually the geny is running to keep the AC’s running. So not sure it makes sense for me… secondly is reliability, what’s better cheap Chinese Amazon power or Elon’s power supply? When I am in the Bahamas on my boat for a week plus what do I trust more?

Yeah, this why I am not in a hurry to do this mod, I always have my generator running as well. But I like the fact that there is less to operate the array. And to be honest what makes you think Elon's PS isn't cheap Chinese crap as well?

I would Keep a spare power supply. They are cheap and small enough

Yes power supply and POE injector if I go that route.

TBH the one I posted is pretty well built. I have one from 5yrs ago that is constantly on for 5v and is in the arch through all the hot and cold weather. But a spare isn't a bad idea.

I have a 48v -> 12V on my golf cart, that’s been there for about 5 years as well. No problems with it.

For us Starlink really opened up the opportunity to spend more time aboard the boat. My wife and I both work remotely. This means we need reliable internet with better than hotspot speeds. The places we love to spend time on the hook requires that we run the gen to power the starlink. Last year we worked on the hook upwards of 2 weeks. I know that's what they are meant for but I just don't like to put that much runtime on the gen really just to power the starlink. If its a warm day and we need AC, yes.

These things can’t pull a lot of power. I would just switch over to the 48v power supply linked above or get a small inverter and run it off the battery banks.

I didn’t read through all of this……but for those that kept their Directv…..will the Dishy affect TV reception if it’s mounted nearby?

I would think you would want to ditch DTV if you get Starlink. That was my main motivation to get this up and running, to be able to stream what ever you like and also be able to have iNet access.

To answer your question, in short no it won't affect DTV reception. There are a few YouTube's on this and so far so good where that is concerned. The only issue will be how close the SL array is to the Dome. The Dome could affect your SL reception.

Ditch the regular DirecTV and switch to DirecTV Stream.

I’m not ready to ditch DTV yet. Mainly because I’m waiting to see how Starlink shakes out for recreational maritime use. In the meanwhile, it’s not too much out of pocket to get the RV version and if at some point the hammer drops on boat use, I won’t be out a ton of $$ if the RV version doesn’t work anymore, or something like that

Can't, well almost, I guess they can do what ever they want. But from their stand point there isn't a difference between an RV or recreational boat. They came out with the mobility version, doesn't say RV only or else. Worst case is you need to spend $2500 on the new array. Notice that price is very close to what the original kvh domes cost us on the boats/Rv's.

Or just ditch DTV all together and get a real service. Sorry I hate DTV. But Checkout YouTubeTV if you want network tv.

DTV stream was just too easy for us to switch to from AT&T Uverse. I don't watch enough TV to justify anything else and the $70 package works at both of my houses.

If you're considering the RV package, I'll likely sell mine soon once they can finish the fiber install at our remote property.

Thanks, yes, I may be interested in that.

Streaming and OTA is fine for dock queens and near-shore / intercoastal. But for us that tend to venture further cellular, OTA, and WiFi are long lost. DTV, Dish, Sirius and now Starlink are really our entertainment links.

Could not agree more. Starlink gives service where none exists. Still can't stand DTV, even though I had them for 15+ years. Streaming with SL is where it is at. At least for me.

Enter DirectTV Stream...over starlink.
