410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

Well I've officially made this a boat project.

After the first day of installing my flooring I realized I probably didn't order enough boxes. I did some quick math and figured I was going to run 2 boxes short based on all the wild cutting that was happening (more waste than I planned for). No problem for any normal DIY'er, head on over to Lowes and get what you need.

Nope, not this guy. Guess what brand of flooring Lowes has recently discontinued? You guessed it...SmartCore Pro! I purchased this stuff in OCTOBER! Ughhhhhh....I couldn't help but laugh when I told my wife. Absolutely my luck. Almost equally frustrating is how much work it is to haul this crap from my truck to the boat, and now back to my truck. It's heavy!

So after two Saturdays shopping with the admiral we found another flooring we liked. It's a tad darker, more grain, but it was our favorite of the 83 new samples we looked at. Ohh and good news guys - it was about $2 per square foot more expensive than the other stuff. Good lord :)

Got a good chunk done today. I decided to stop when I messed up a long curved cut around the aft edge of the couch. I like the way it looks but I think I'm going to have to paint the wood around the mirrors and the pocket door. The existing wood trim in those spots is a bit too red...it's mildly offensive next to this stuff.

I'd also like the record to show that I nearly died 8 times today with those hatch covers removed...sober even.

lol these flooring projects always have a few surprises. Looks great, I like the new look as well.

I fell in those holes so many times I lost count.

Looking really good. Boat projects take at least 5x the time it should and 10x the cost, especially if you do it 2x!

I’ve been spending a lot of time at Lowes lately with some home projects, I think I might have seen your original flooring there on the clearance rack about a week ago. I would have happily looked for you, I just went through the same thing with a discontinued product and a friend of mine found it in one of their local stores - 100 miles away.

Yeah I poked around a few online retailers that "might" have had some stock as well. With storage season being only so long I figured I needed to make a move. Shoot, the way our winter is going we could be launching in March :)

Looks great - nice job.

Does anyone know what size the rudder shaft packing is on the 410?
I forgot to check it when I was at the boat.

I used 1/4" PTFE shaft packing. Takes 3-4 sections about 5" each.

I should really do this job but for some reason I’m dreading it. How much of a pain was it?

Its not bad, but the packings are "up" in the nut, so getting the old packing out was the difficulty as you are working blind. The nut opening faces down, and there isnt a lot of room to push up and get room to work. There isnt a lot of room to swing the big wrench either.

Getting a packing removal tool if very helpful.

But its not an emergency job usually. If its got a slow leak, you can tighten up the nut. If your out of adjustment space, it can be done in the water.

thanks. I haven’t touched them but I suspect the packing is original. It drips for a week after we splash then it stops, I’m guessing once the packing swells. I’ll probably just tighten them down this year and keep it on the list for next off-season

Are you still out of the water? If so, its a lot less stressful, and its a couple hours job for both sides.

If already back in the water, it can wait.

Which model are those? I have been trying to find something that fits over the old holes properly.
They are Hella Marine 980620911. If you want a set I can sell you a set and drop ship them to you. I own a marine electronics company. Lakeeriemarineelectronics.com

In the end how many sq ft do you estimate the job took?
