Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

I’ve never seen an official requirement from CAT about running the engine at WOT other than its expected a certain amount of the time.

I think idling around for extended periods without getting into the power band with the turbo producing boost is just as bad. I don’t think you need to go to WOT to achieve this, just a good run inthe usual cruising RPM range 2000-2400.
The engines should be exercised to full throttle routinely. It is best to allow the rack and injector unit / governor to run through their full motion.

Call General Propeller, I beleive they we the OEM on the shafts. I think I had a quote for $1800 a couple years ago.

Ship them your props and have them lap the taper so they match.
They actually asked for the coupler to match...

Talk to Pablo at General Propeller.

If you can't get him, try Jeff.

Good people.

So sorry about your luck......

What happened??
We were up in British Columbia for 2 weeks of cruising. We left Tacoma last Saturday at 7:30am, and arrived in Sidney BC around 1pm. We spent 3 lovely nights there, July 4th we left on our way to Brentwood Bay. Navionics on the Raymarine and my ipad routed us through Page Passage, we went from 30 feet to 3 feet. Hull, props, strut...

OUCH !

Underwater exhaust OK?

What kind of hull damage?

Did the strut pull out of the hull?

Were you on plane?

I know it can be embarrassing, but photos and details of your experience can certainly benefit the Forum.

Maybe this experience will force me to set the depth alarm on my Raymarine Axiom.....

Anyone have a ballpark $$ amount for a new shaft for my 450 ?

Mark, I had 2 450 shafts made about 10 years ago at a local marine machine shop in Panama City. I picked them up in my truck and didn't have to ship them. The cost for the pair was $950, total and we went up to Aquamet-22 from the OEM-AQ19 with. There was no shipping so the cost would not be comparabe to oour cost 10 years ago, unless you You should be able to find a machine shop within driving distance withand shafting capability on the west coast.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that, but you'll get her fixed and back in business!

Unfortunately, you might not even get half a shaft for that amount these days.

In light of this, I'm thinking your going to have to get this done locally. From your parts manual. Looks like 1.75" shaft 92 1/4" long with a double taper see #11 below. Original material was AQ19, but there are various grades of shaft material available as frank pointed out. AQ19 is roughly a 304 SS alloy, the AQ22 is more akin to 316. If you can recondition the props, tapering a shaft isn't a very difficult job for most machine shops, and this info should be about all the shop needs to get you a couple shafts made.

Hi Frank,

Hope y'all are doing well.

What was the reason, if I may ask for the upgrade to Aquamet 22 on your 450 ?

BEST !
