Now that the boat is getting ready to be put away for the winter I figured it was finally time to write about our boat vacation this year. We took two weeks and headed from our home port on the Hudson River and went up to Provincetown. This is a really long post, but there are a lot of pictures.

Our first night we made it to Greenport, NY. We stayed at Mitchell park Marina where we met up with Russ and Marybeth (Last Dance).
The Camera Obscura was closed, but it would have been neat to go inside.

While we were there we stopped to see the Village Blacksmith, he made us a neat hook that we keep on the boat now.
Img_4222.jpg

Img_4225.jpg

We stopped to check out the Carousel and missed the brass ring by one.
Img_4241.jpg

Img_4247.jpg

They had some Shakespeare in the Park production, but the kids had enough after a few minutes. There was also a Bertram gathering of some sort.
Img_4252.jpg

The next day we headed over to Coecles Harbor where we rafted up. We got to meet Gene 'Rubber Duckee' and Ric 'Katricol'. We had a great time that day, we should definitely do it again next year. When Alex 'Boat a Bing' showed up we did a little exploring. There is a house on Taylors Island that is open to the public. It was neat, we took the dinghys over to check it out. There was a lady there to tell us all about it.

Here's was our raft-up for the night. This was our first time anchoring for the night.
Img_4329.jpg

After the awesome sunset, and the awesome dinner we had that night, we did a little night fishing with those cool under water lights on Last Dance. Ashley still talks about catching that fish (Thanks again Russ)

Got up the next morning and did some more exploring with Boat-a-Dink and Baby TAZ. After that we did a little knee-boarding. This next pic is the sunrise...

Here's Alex, his first time knee-boarding, along side of the dinghy.
Img_8885.jpg

The kids definitely had a good time
Img_8847.jpg

We anchored Alex's dinghy while we were knee-boarding, just so it wouldn't drift away. Luckily, the anchor held.

After a long day of fun in the sun, it was off to Battleship Cove. The seas were a little rough, but they seemed to be worse behind the boat.
Img_8930.jpg

It was pretty cool being moored right next to the Battleship.
Img_4387.jpg

Img_4462.jpg

The view from the helm is similar to the 480DB. Well, maybe a little bigger.
Img_4463.jpg

Img_4456.jpg

Img_4393.jpg

After a day of touring all the ships, we set out to do a little crabbing. We only caught 1 keeper, and it didn't last very long.
Img_9032.jpg

Img_4549.jpg

Got up the next morning and headed to Newport. We stayed at The Newport, when we got there we called the fuel barge to come and fill us up.
Img_4638.jpg

Then it was off to check out the Mansions. I forget which one is Gary's.
Img_4693.jpg

Img_4715.jpg

Img_4723.jpg

Walked around town a bit.
Img_4781.jpg

Img_4788.jpg

After dinner the kids got to check out the pool, and I got to check out my underwater camera.
Img_9117.jpg

The next day we headed through the Cape Cod Canal off to Provincetown.
Img_4801.jpg

We kept getting yelled at for going too fast, then this guy comes along and nobody says anything. I don't understand it.
Img_4808.jpg

Once we got to Provincetown my daughter found a star fish on a piling.
Img_4887.jpg

Tried our luck at crabbing again, and a lobster snuck into the trap. Once again it didn't last long.
Img_4911.jpg

King Baby docked in front of us
Img_4942.jpg

Walked up to the top of the Pilgrim Monument
Img_4992.jpg

Saw some cool statues on the street corners (at least I think they were statues)
Img_5008.jpg

Img_4838.jpg

Img_4850.jpg

And a few other 'Interesting' folks. The kids thought it was a little strange that all these guys were dressing like girls. It's kind of like Halloween we told them...
Img_4860.jpg

Img_5012.jpg

The next day we went out whale watching. I asked what time the whale watch tours were leaving and 'followed' a boat out to the general area. If you've never been whale watching, you should go. It was amazing... At first we didn't know what to expect, saw these water spouts, and thought 'oh that's pretty neat'
Img_5160.jpg

But then it got better, The pictures don't show it well but it was wild seeing these huge whales right next to and under the boat.

Nighttime...

After Provincetown, we stopped for lunch in Sandwich. Checked out the Glass Museum, and had some Stuffed Quahogs at Marshland. It was on 'The Best Thing I Ever Ate'

Img_5309.jpg

Img_5311.jpg

Then we were off to Buzzards Bay, I saw a water park that looked like it could be fun. It was in the movie Grown Ups.
Img_9157.jpg

Img_9159.jpg

After that we headed over to the go-cart track.
Img_9207.jpg

From there we stopped at Block Island. I was going to stop at Cuttyhunk, but was out voted.
Img_9225.jpg

Raked up some clams for lunch
Img_9259.jpg

Spent the afternoon on Dinghy Beach
Img_9267.jpg

Then it was back home...

Told you it was a long post...

Great pictures, looks like everyone had a good time.
I live down the street from The Glass museum and Marshlands.

Great trip and photos....Next year do Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard......It is never Halloween there! Thanks for sharing your trip and great boat...

I can't see the pics :smt089. The problem might be that my company is blocking them..

Wow..great pics and story! I will now stop posting pics of my tiny little boat and boring little lake.

What a voyage, Greg!!! Thank you for sharing with us.
I’m just envious of your well organized marinas and how easy is to hop from one spot to the other. Here in the Med is just too overcrowded and we suffer from having way too few slips available.

Thanks John, we did that trip a few years ago with the 340. Probably do it again some day though...

Hmmm, that's odd, I could try putting them on a different server. Can you see my signature pic?

Thanks for the cruise,
Whale watching from you boat must have been amazing.
How far out is it to the watching areas??
I would love to do that in summer 2011.
Were there other private boats as well?
Great post.
Mark.

Greg

Don't worry about it. I will check them out from my home PC. My company blocks certain websites. For a few weeks they were actually blocking all email websites

Greg...real nice post. It was nice meeting you and family at coecles harbor and Kathy and I only wish we could have stayed longer. We all are truly blessed with living near one of the three greatest cruising area's of the country. So many places to go and things to see ! Hope to meet-up with you guys again next summer. Ric

Just a quick note for those willing to travel next year. We are "attempting" to put together a Aquapalooza at the west end of the Cape Cod Canal, right near where that picture of the railroad bridge is. Shooting for next August at an event called "The Bassackwards Sailboat Race". Last year there were 800 boats and approx. 4K people at this event. Great time and I didn't see one sail boat race! There is one, but the party has taken over the event. http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/...1549248009618_1187626049_1594911_852644_n.jpg

Awesome pics. My mother was from Fall River, and I can still remember seeing that battleship from the back seat of my daddy's car as we wnt across the Braga bridge (in the background). Great memories.

Hmmm... my cousin lives in Onset, not too far from the canal. I'll have to roll up the dinghy and toss it in the car. Ya'll wouldn't mind a dinghy in your raft up, would ya? It'll hold a cooler. Hehe.

Greg,

Very nice write up and great pics. It brought great memories of the time we spent in LI. Can't wait to do it again. The whale watching looks very exciting, I can only imagine the feeling having those whales right next to your boat. I bet this was the only time you felt that 480DB is not as big as you thought, LOL.

My thoughts were exactly as Vince’s as soon as I saw that picture (looking at your boat from the battleship).
Unit the next summer…
Cheers,
Alex

It was pretty amazing, there was one other private boat that I saw, along with maybe 3 or 4 big whale watching tour boats.

I just pulled up the tracks from the trip, the area where we saw the whales was around:

42' 13.175N, 70' 08.076W

It was about 10 NM north of the tip of Cape Cod, in the Stellwagen Bank, but I imagine they move around. I recommend if you go, do what I did, and tag along a tour boat.

I stayed quite a ways back, just kept him barely in sight. I acquired him as a target on radar, just in case I lost him.

Once we were there, all the boats converged on the same general location.
