Hi,
I just joined Club SeaRay today. I'm looking forward to participating in the forums.
I wanted to perhaps make a few suggestions. We were previously looking to buy a Silverton and so I joined the Silverton Owners Club. What I liked about the SOC website was:
1. There is one flat member rate of $28 per year. Everyone that wants to join the SOC pays the $28. The membership fee entitles you to 12 newsletters per year in addition to accessing the forums and other benefits. The newsletter is sent out about every 4-6 weeks. So when you've received your 11th newsletter, a membership renewal notice is sent to you so that you can renew your membership.
2. The SOC affiliated themselves with Boat US; once you join SOC, you're sent a coupon via email that is good for half-price membership to Boat US. So instead of paying a $25 membership fee to Boat US, SOC members pay $12.50. Additionally, SOC members get a $5 discount on Boat US's unlimited towing option. Five dollars is five dollars!
3. There are scheduled Chat Sessions. The chat sessions are scheduled twice a week in the evening, for a specified time period (I think 2 hours each).
4. In the Forum, in addition to topics such as "Gas Engines" or "Repair," etc., there is a link for each type of vessel -- e.g., Silverton 34C Traditional (1989 and older); Silverton 34C Contemporary (1990 and newer); Silverton 362; etc. It would be nice to have a similar type topic list for Sea Rays.
5. There were also links for "Marinas and Restaurants", "Boating Industry News", "From the Captain", "Questions from Wannabees/Newbies."
6. The SOC also puts out a newsletter about once a month to its members. The newsletter (in PDF format) touches on topics such as: specific repair advice; industry news; recalls; events. Members can contribute to the newsletter too, including recent boat trips that were taken. I think they spotlight one member per month.
7. Members are allowed to place classified ads on the website for free until the item sells. Non-members are allowed to place classified ads on the website, too, for a fee.
8. There is a description of how becoming a Member benefits you. It tells you how to become a member (registration & payment procedure) and what the membership perks are.
Anyway, these are just a few of the things I liked about the SOC website. I think it made it for a very robust and energetic forum. I don't know if any of these suggestions are appealing to others, but I just wanted to put it out there.
Thanks.
