Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

According to my Diesel mechanic CAT now recommends a 200 degree thermostat. I just ran mine for 11 hours straight wit no issues whatsoever. I think its burning slightly cleaner but cant say for certain.

So I have look and looked for an answer but have failed to find one or a direction on a fix. I have a 2000 410 with 3126's. The port engine started to lack power the summer of 21 and we changed the turbo over the winter. In the spring there was no change still would only run to 2100 2200 lagging behind the starboard engine. Last summer I installed boost gauged and the port is 6/7 pounds less boost at 2200, and will not rev under load past 2200. I had a retired cat marine mechanic of 35 years come out and said the cups needed to be reamed. He reamed the cups and set the rack, and still no change. This last weekend we blew the fuel line back into the tank. No change. And thoughts on what it could be? I roll some coal from the engine down on power and boost. Could the aftercoolers be clogged? I have only run 40w, but I don't know what the previous owners used. About 1875 hours on each engine. Any help would be appreciated.

yea, the aftercoolers could absolutely be dirty though 6-7lbs is a lot

when you swapped the turbo did you replace the boost hose that goes from
the compressor to the aftercooler?

Oil analysis done on the engines regularly?

Yes I send samples th Blackstone at the end of the season when I change it 25 30 hours and every year it has come back without issue. We did change the hose also when the turbo was changed. The starboard will hit 23 psi and the port 14 when getting on plane.

I had a similar issue on my 3116 it was clogged aftercooler

yeah, 14 is very low. Air filter clean?

sounds like aftercooler service is next. Not impossible that one would clog up faster than the other

Air cleaners have been cleaned and I ran it on a 2 hour trip with both removed no change.

Who can clean them properly? A radiator shop?

I flushed mine myself while still installed on the engines, some disagree with this approach but it worked well for me. Check out the videos on my YouTube page below if you're interested.

that’s only good for the seawater side. Low boost means the air side could be clogged

a radiator shop does this work and will pressure test them while they’re there. Call your local CAT dealer and ask who they recommend, ours has a preferred local shop well versed in aftercoolers and how to best clean them. You’ll need a gasket and will need to paint them before you reinstall

For our new member:

The 3126 is a great engine, however be advised: It does require more ongoing maintenance than the 3116 due to the salt water cooling side of the air intake system.

This is critical to this engine's well being.

BEST !

Did one of my mid season WOT runs today, 1/2 water and 3/4 fuel - port 2775 and starboard 2820.

The port was creeping up a couple revs when I pulled back but doesn’t accelerate as hard as the starboard. Egt and boost were identical, but the starboard side has new injectors (last month) and the port are still original.

there is no doubt some bottom growth, so I’m not overly concerned with the 2775 number, just odd that they didn’t match as they normally do.

I doubt you can get them to match exactly, ever. Just to many variables. Might be the port get more sun/growth on that prop.

My starboard engine is a little "stronger" than the port. EGT is slightly higher on Starboard as well (which I would expect), but the boost is slightly lower. Maybe I need to clean up the port after cooler!

yeah, exactly. Curse of twin engines - they’re never really twins. I did notice the starboard side pitched down even though tabs were totally retracted, so maybe one is sticking a little bit. I’ll swim under and take a peek this weekend.

boat ran great at wide open though. Just a tick over 31mph and that’s with the dinghy on the platform

I notice mine fluctuate during the year too. That’s the great thing about Aetna tachs, you always know for sure. (I think you run those too)
I have 2 sets of sea ray analog tachs in storage to prove the hours if need be, otherwise, they are worthless.
